IIRC this kicked off with NT 3.1 so it's been a long time coming!  OS2
2.1 was better though!

I think future versions of windows are moving toward 64bit machines
and slowly toward the depreciation of Win32API in favor of .NET
framework.   To be backward compatible a version 10 years hence will
need to do a lot of emulating (but then the CPU will be so fast too)
