The other day I purchased The Curse of Monkey Island. It came with a
CD containing the original 2 Monkey Island games. I loved those games
very much in my teenage years but looking at them now is
heartbreaking. Nothing has changed really except for my perception of
the graphics. 320x200 looked impressive back when those games first
came out, but looks quite dated and blocky compared to what I've
become accoustomed to. Then a tought struck me. I play a lot of old
SNES games using the ZSNES emulator which has the Eagle and 2xsai
engines for increasing the resolutions for SNES games. The result is
smooth cartoony graphics. So now I'm wondering if it would be
possable to apply the 2xsai engine to old DOS games like Monkey
Island. My first thought was to present the idea to Lucasarts in
hopes of them making an updated executable with 2xsai included.
Problem is, big game companies don't really care about updating old
games, and they don't take unsolicited ideas. What to do????

The solution is a program that intercepts the game's transfer of data
to the video memory, applies 2xsai to the incoming graphics, and
outputs the new higher-res image to video memory. This program could
be run in conjuction with most 2D dos games like those made by Sierra
and Lucasarts. Does this sound plausable? If so could someone help
me out on how I would go about intercepting the writes to video
memory?

The following screenshot is from Monkey Island 2. The first one is
taken directly from the original game. The second one is after 2xsai
has been applied using a 2xsai conversion utility. This example shows
how awesome those old games would be to play again using 2xsai
technology.
