I've identified the problems (there were two); I thought you might be
interested in what was happening...

The first was very simple, and really I should have spotted it. Basically
the program was failing to find data file because of the working path, and
hanging.

The second problem was less easily solved. I was asking for 1280*760 of
virtual screen memory. On re-reading the Allegro docs, I discovered that you
can't depend on anything over 1024*1024, so I reprogrammed the game to work
within these boundaries. Hey presto, it works :-)
