   God.  It's a world of difference.  The SB 1.0 has only one channel of digital
playback, so the CPU must mix all of the audio that is put through it in order
to simulate the 4 channels (or whatever) that the mod file wants.

   YES!  I'd *love* to.  I gave GUS programming a try.  But my MOD loader 
never worked properly, and I never got the GUS IRQ code working either.
(Hooking the timer IRQ isn't such an awful thing, though.)  (I never bothered
figuring out DMA.  I poked the samples into GRAM byte by byte.  Worked pretty
well, though.  (Except that I accidentally incremented my GRAM pointer twice
per sample, which REALLY screwed things up a bit... :)
   But yes, I will be more than willing to beta-test it.  I do have a GUS and
absolutely love it.  (If you don't already, you may wish to subscribe to the 
GUS programmer's digest.
