Hmm... there's no BASH in that list. I suspect that could be what allowed
these commands to work on the older Win95, but not on the new one.

In a Win2000 box, that shouldn't be necessary. DJGPP programs can use
long filenames, there (albeit with the occasional new bug strewn in by
your friendly supplier in Redmond, WA, U.S. of A., it seems).
The error '-1' shown by make means that it the command failed even
before it started (usually because the programs wasn't found)...
Did you check what 'set' displays in the DOS Box right before/after
you compile? Are the environment variables really in place?
