Whoever told you that lied. One of the big advantages of GCC is that
it does allow you speficy debugging info when optimizing code. Most
native unix compiler respond with something like this.
typhoon:temp$ cc -c -g -O hello.c
cc: warning 414: Debug and Optimization are mutually exclusive. -O option ignored.
