Actually, there was a version of edit that MS put out after DOS 6.22 (I
think) that was edit.exe and was the first to support multiple files and
files of any size. Just correcting you. Heh.

OS 7.x, then you have Windows 95, and I believe
that Win95's Notepad does use real tabs. In fact, I just confirmed it.
It's interesting to note that even DOS 7's Edit does not interfere with
tabs that are already in a file; it just won't put them in by itself.
If you're going to do serious programming in DJGPP, though, I recommend
using one of the excellent IDEs that are available. Both RHIDE and
Emacs use real tabs (and have lots of other useful features besides).
Emacs even has a mode specifically for generating makefiles.
