You mean display lists I hope. But even these aren't what most
mean by retained mode.

Yes I laughed, I don't think there's a clear understanding
of the need for common, powerfull, flexible and extensible
hardware abstraction.
An API is there as an easy to use abstraction layer, and if
it's a "hellish orgreish thing to try and actually accomplish
anything" then it is not "a decent API".
Sorry for spelling this out I felt the need.
