As long as it serves its purpose, a program DOES NOT need to be updated
at all. Look at TeX. It's on a once every four years update schedule
right now. The last release updated only a few lines of code. The next
release is not due until the year 2000. Yet it's tremendously useful
and powerful.
For free software at least, this has to be the "business model". You
spend five to ten years writing a program and make it perfect. And you
move on to other things, knowing full well that your program will
sustain itself through the years.
By the way, how do you discontinue something like DJGPP? Stop selling
it?
