Well that's somewhat dependent on the driver's capabilities. If the
card doesn't implement a certain function in hardware the CPU has to
do it. Also Hover doesn't even use DirectX it uses WinG. DirectX
wasn't around when Win95 and Hover first shipped. If the VESA VBE/AF
specification were implemented across a wider range of video cards
(and not just by SciTech) DOS games using it would be on a par with
DirectX games maybe faster because in pure DOS mode there isn't the
overhead of context switching and everything that goes along with
Windows. All in all I like Windows as a game platform but I like DOS
too.
