)...I was looking for gnu make ported to MS-DOS

Simtel/vendors/djgpp/v2gnu/mak373b.zip, only works with DPMI installed,
   for instance: Simtel/vendors/djgpp/v2misc/csdpmi1b.zip

   OR: Simtel/vendors/djgpp/v1gnu/mak371bn.zip & mak371dc.zip
   needs go32 to work.

It seems that DOS is a difficult platform for make. The versions of
GNU make listed above work very well; however, they use batch files in
intermediate steps, and this breaks many unix-style makefile
constructs.

I haven't found the "perfect make for DOS", but dmake-3.8 has been
widely used under OS/2 and DOS in porting unix-like software. dmake,
along with two different versions of 16bit GNU make appear as part of
the GNUish Project (16bit ports to OS/2 and DOS). wuarchive.wustl.edu
is in the process of restoring from tape; when complete, the programs
should appear in systems/msdos/gnuish.
