It seems that DOS is a difficult platform for make. The versions of GNU make listed above work very well; however, they use batch files in intermediate steps, and this breaks many unix-style makefile constructs. I haven't found the "perfect make for DOS", but dmake-3.8 has been widely used under OS/2 and DOS in porting unix-like software. dmake, along with two different versions of 16bit GNU make appear as part of the GNUish Project (16bit ports to OS/2 and DOS). wuarchive.wustl.edu is in the process of restoring from tape; when complete, the programs should appear in systems/msdos/gnuish. -- --Darrel Hankerson hankedr AT mail DOT auburn DOT edu
