I recently updated the Linux distribution on one of the two machines the above compilation had failed. I tried the installation there again and it succeeded! Checking the packages reveals a newer version of the "autoconf" package: 2.12 while on the other machine there is 2.10. I installed autoconf-2.12 on that machine as well and now the compilation works! This just for your information.
