i compile with -O6 on all my stuff.  once in a blue moon i have to use
-O2, but it is very rare.

i also compile with -mamdk6 because most of my machines are now k6
processors.  the kernels and all appear to work just dandy on the intel
chips.

i do normally see improvements in performance.
