Don't know about 8.x, but in 7.x disabling of autoload controlled by DOS=AUTO and DOS=NOAUTO in config.sys. 2. Installed XMS manager shouldn't cause QEMM hanging - QEMM should give warning/error. Probably, there is conflict between QEMM and MS-DOS 8.x.
