Hmmm, Paul, this really isn't the place for such a discussion (we've pushed the bounds of topicality with this Linux stuff already); but I want to say that this sounds like user error to me. :) That's not an attack nor an insult (at least not intended as such). In my time playing with GNU/Linux I've found that there's almost always a rational explanation for everything, and that the vast majority of problems are due to user error. You're probably doing something wrong at a very basic level. Best thing to do is to consult the docs for your distro (Slackware has The Book for beginners at http://www.slackware.com/book/ ) and go from there. There are many places online where you can find help. Possibly the most important thing to realise (easing this back toward topic :) is that UNIX != DOS, so a different approach is often best.
