Eg. the fact is that the DR-DOS REN can easily butcher a directory's LFN information, so you should never use it on a drive that is shared with Windoze 9X. Have you tried Odi's LFN tools? IIRC, these include a LFN-aware REN utility, although I don't remember if this supports the "list" example that you gave, below.
