Created target directory for ProComm Plus. 2. Changed directory to above, on target drive. 3. From A:, tried to install - failed, but no lock-up or crash. 4. Changed to root directory on target drive. 5. From A:, tried again to install - success! So, this doesn't seem to be a DR-DOS issue - there must be some other factor - hardware or TSR's or something ...
