Opppps,, you are right, I was thinking of ZIP and LS-120 and hard drives at the time I thought of that. No, No, If you have a seingle drive it should be set as a single drive, this is sometimes labled CHS but have seen other labels for it. (Talk about standards they cannot even get that straight.) Many times this is just not installing a jumper or putting it across two pins where it won't do anything. Some drives have the CHS pins and other do not.(Again another great standard.)
