Answer : Because at least one of his drives, ie. the 4X
CD-ROM, is most likely to *pre-date* the ATAPI standard
and is therefore unlikely to comply with it!

Please do not confuse the ATA standard(s) with the
ATAPI standard, although they have now merged
somewhat. The ATAPI standard was developed much
later (and by a different group) than the ATA standard.

Furthermore, it is quite possible that what we see
in this instance is simply a bug in the software, be
it NWCDEX or the "Player" software (which may
assume that only one CD-ROM-like drive exists,
and ignore the second drive).
