MINIX was what was used all over the world by students.  
Linus originally wrote LINUX as an exercise to see if he could make 
something better than MINIX, which was rather limited when 
compared to a full version of UNIX (which would not run on a PC). 

Possibly your 286 version was the original LINUX kernal, before all 
the GNU modifications and utilities were added.
