A simplification. Win 3.x preemptively multitasks DOS sessions, and cooperatively multitasks Windows 16-bit and 32-bit programs. Win9x preemptively multitasks DOS and Win32 programs, but cooperatively multitasks 16-bit programs. : Yes, Linux as a 32-bit protected mode system, DOS supports 16/32-bit : real/protected mode. See vm86(2).
