Why would they have to do that to under price Compaq? They could have used cadillac parts and still under sell them! PB just got caught. Many other manufactures have done this, they just didn't get caught. Local computer stores do the same crap. I have seen it myself in manuafcturing. Although I was not at a computer factory, I have worked at several consumer electronic equipment factories and other non electronic factories. PB was probably doing this big time and that is why they got caught. Companies like PB and Compaq that build hundreds or tousands of computers a day, cannot possibly burn them in for 72 hours and do good quality control. So they ship out equipment that can go bad or even be delivered not working. This all occurs because of greed. They get so large and have to produce so many computers, they can hardly keep up with the market. They cut prices to sell them to discount stores that order them in very large quantities. Then it can cost them a bundle, because someone troubleshoots the defective computer and will pull good parts out thinking they may be the bad part. Sometimes they cannot really determine the bad component and send several back for replacements. many of these parts are perfectly good. They also have to pay for shipping the parts, then restocking them as used parts to send out when the next defextive part comes in. This becomes an endless cycle. All of this forces the small guy out of the business because they cannot compete with K-mart prices. The consumer has no idea of what a good quality computer is from a piece of junk like a PB or Compaq. If they would pay another 10% to 20% more and go to a good local computer store that would build a computer to comstomer specs, they would save more money over the long hall. Unfortunately the consumer is to blame for a large part of this problem. Many years ago, America was known for making high quality products. but when the consumers started buy cheap and inferior imports, quality went south. Now the name of the game is quantity. I cannot even remember how many places I have worked for that preach QUALITY is our number one product, then scream because you are not shipping enough product, because some penciled eyed, pinhead jerk is looking at the bottom line. In the end it is the consumer that gets screwed because they were too stupid to research wwhat they are buying and buy a quality product. So my attitude is, well my dear I frankly don't giva a ... So people that buy Winmodems, Packaerd bell, Compaq and a host of other crap, get what they deserve. Actually back in the mid to late 80's Packard Bell made Quality computers. Then they got geedy. I can tell you for a fact, that there are people out there that should not even have a computer. I have seen total idiots when comes to buying a computer and spend $6000 for one and can't even figure how to turn it on!!!!! I have run across idiots that could go out and buy a toaster and read the instructions and still burn their toast and blame it as a defective toaster!!!!!! Many years ago, I went on a service call for a brand new TV that had just been delivered. he called the company I worked for that sold him the TV and said he was getting snowy pcitures on his TV. He said he was connected to cable. So I went out to his house and looked at the TV. Sure enough all the local stations were snowy. I asked this idiot, who connected the cable? He replied that the landlord connected the cable to the TV. It took me at least ten minutes to try and explain to this idiot, that there another end to this cable that must be connected by the cable TV company. I do not think he ever did understand it! This is a true story. There are people like this that buy computers!!!!! 'nough said! Pat _________________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
