When DRFAT32.SYS encounters an error it will refuse to load. Since there will be no "FAT32XXX" device driver than, DRFAT32.EXE will also refuse to load. So far, so good. Before DRFAT32.SYS logs in FAT32 partitions, it painstakingly analyzes the entries in the partition table and the FAT32 boot sector to ensure it finds a valid FAT32 partition to work with. Most of these sanity checks can be overridden when using DRFAT32.SYS command line options. For a list of available options, just give it an invalid command line like /? or view the DRFAT32.SYS in a file browser that can display binary files. You will find the help messages near the end of the driver image. From the vage description of the problem I would think, that DRFAT32.SYS has either problems to correctly interpret the CHS entries in the partition table, or these CHS entries are not matching the entries in the boot sector, or for unknown reasons the BIOS gives an error when DRFAT32.SYS attempt to read a sector. One thing to try is to force it to use the LBA entries (/X IIRC) even when the partition is of CHS type. For this to work LBA access must be enabled in the BIOS for the corresponding drive, so changing the drive type in the mainboards setup might help. There are also a number of other overrides for buggy entries created by most issues of Norton Disk Doctor and to switch to use a special CHS mapping introduced with some 386 machines of various brands. However, this seems to be a bit too specific to explain without knowing better details on the partitioning. I would like to have a look at the MBR and the boot sector of the corresponding drive. These can be read out using DEBUG or any kind of Diskeditor. The MBR is also saved away in a hidden file OLDMBR.BIN in the root of the C: drive when writing a new MBR code from within the DR-DOS FDISK. I would also appreciate a report created by PowerQuest's PARTINFO (freely available from their site). Having these files, I will most probably be able to help.
