DOS expects "C" drive to be at the front of the disk, be bootable, and have its entries in the proper part of the MBR, hence, your FAT disk is an imposter as it is not a properly installed DOS "c" drive. < I had thought that this only applies when you really want to *boot* from C, which I don't.
