Thanks for the tip regarding the use of a driver from another CD-ROM, Fran.

As it happens, swapping the Zip drive (ATAPI) to slave on the 1st IDE and
the CD-ROM to the 2nd IDE has solved all the problems, except for the
SCSIUTIL app locking the machine.
I'm using 7.02 with the 7.03 updates so I'm not sure what else to do.
Anyway that's not a big problem and I can live with it.
