As the GEM users probably know, it's rather easy to set-up GEM to use 3rd party high-resultion drivers, and for almost all 'old' SVGA cards (those with up to 1MB video memory and ISA or VL bus) the manufactures provided GEM 3.x drivers. Since DR DOS' ViewMAX is a derivative work of the GEM 3.x desktop, GEM video drivers also work with ViewMAX. However, nowadays it doesn't make much sense to develop SVGA drivers for all the various cards out there, hence a VESA implementation would be very nice to enable more than 640x480 under GEM/ViewMAX, which is still a nice and useful graphical shell for people with low-end hardware. Maybe someone is volunteering to develop such a driver?
