I have my biased reasons of "why" but I'll keep them to myself. I don't put CTRL-R's in filenames or ALT-234's so I don't appreciate spaces either. However, the IFS must accept them I suppose for compatibility with FS's that allow them. I think the new native FS should support but discourage them. Even worse than spaces in filenames are '!' chars. Try and do ANYTHING with a file with a ! in it in UNIX! YIKES!!!!!!!!!! Mike A.
