My brother has gone back to using Mess-DOS this weekend. He's just installed MS Office 4.3, using win 3.1. Word 6 goes berserk on startup, it says 'cannot load NORMAL.DOT'. First I removed OpenEMM386 and used the fat, hairy, MSemm386 instead. Now it says 'not enough memory to run Word.' I have performed thorough checks. The User, system and GDI heaps are all quite empty, there is 7Mb free, more than enough. I remember that 'Not enough memory' can also mean 'Unknown error.. what shall we tell him?' I have tried many combinations of MS and Caldera memory managers, all in vain. Files=100 and there are 90 file sharing locks. (Desparation!) Word only works if MSDOS is running underneath. Is there a cure? Here are another couple of probs that haven't stopped ME from using it: 1. My programs cannot change the palette if the multitasker is running [switchtasker is fine]. To whit, the Ultima 6 developer's kit on my web page (http://members.tripod.com/~JPMorris) And most programs written with my graphics library. Palette set using REP OUTSB opcodes. 2. High-band VESA graphics modes are trashed when I switch tasks, such as povray etc. A bit annoying. On an unrelated note, my Jazz16 sound card now plays all windows sounds at about half speed. In fact it actually seems to be playing everything at 8KHz instead of 11k. It does sound wierd but I would prefer if it stopped. It only happened since I re-installed the drivers. Any idea where I could get some generic soundblaster-pro compatible drivers? JP Morris - .sig pending.. aka jpmorris AT csm DOT uwe DOT ac DOT uk
