FAT == sucks ext2 == awesome (DOS with ext2 would == awesome) I *DO* use Linux, however I would like to use ext2 for a native *DOS* filesystem. I'm talking about having a machine running DOS 100% of the time on ext2. NO FAT FS period. Linux NOT anywhere on the machine. DOS + ext2 period. How does Linux get into the picture when we are talking about ext2 in DOS *ALONE* without Linux? > By the way, installing DOS on your Linux machine is a breach of security > for Linux already. Allowing DOS to "mount" any Linux partition read/write > turns everyone into root. No, it turns ME into root as no one else uses my machine locally. Even if they DID use my machine, I've got no need for such security anyways and no need to fear anyone messing with my machine. Since anyone using my machine in the last 5 years was certainly capable of screwing up my DOS CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, and formatting my hard disk, and since none of that happened, I feel pretty safe. Those who DONT feel safe can opt to install a ext2-less DOS kernel. Everyone will want AND get what they want. > And if you want to keep the security, you need to port the /etc/passwd file > to DOS, and all the getuid(), getgid() system calls. This is rediculous. We are talking about adding a REAL filesystem to a brain damaged OS, not turning DOS into UNIX. You could just as easily change every reference of ext2 in any of the postings to HPFS or NTFS. The point is that MANY people want a better FS, and since the sources are coming out, everyone can get what they want. > BTW, you already can "mount" your ext2 file systems in DOS, with "e2tools". > It allows you to read (readonly) your Linux native partitions from DOS. Yes, I have e2tools allready. It allows me to copy files from my Linux ext2 partitions when I forget to move them from Linux to DOS while in Linux. However it doesn't allow me to boot DOS from an ext2 partition with no other OS on the machine. Another cool IFS would be the Rock Ridge extensions to ISO-9660 so that RRE's would appear in DOS as LFN's with symlinks, etc... Time will tell... Mike A.
