I for one, like the magnetic mode and use its power to my advantage :-)

I can only look back to the time since 2006. Since then improvements of
the gschem UI have been incremental but noticible. From the top of my
head:

* dialogues are not blocking anymore. (Except for some exceptions)
* auto number got included in the GUI
* Junctions got a different color than net end markers
* "kissing mode" to start a net
* magnetic net mode improves my hit rate when zoomed out
* smooth lines rather than hard XOR-dots for the grid
* accel keys to increment/decrement the grid
* the symbol chooser got a preview and a search function
* set the line width in the GUI=20
