There’s some dotty old chap on this list who would consider that a feature. :P Seriously though, I love the idea, the principle, of geda which I think can be summed up by its use of a plain text, tool agnostic file format. Geda’s achilles heel (IMHO) is its reliance on Guile/Scheme, which is obtuse and unmanageable at best — I think the majority of messages I’ve seen on this list in recent history have been from people struggling to get going due to Guile. Some years ago now I started a re-development of geda from the ground up, and I was very well advanced in that project before I canned it. The final ’nail in the coffin’ for geda, and the reason that I canned my own effort, was KiCAD’s switch to a plain text S-expression file format. KiCAD now ticks every box for me that geda once did, in addition to being actively developed, supported and working out-of-the-box on multiple platforms. I can use each of the KiCAD tools in a non-PCB, workflow agnostic manner if I need to, just as I did with geda. So, yes, sadly geda is dead to me. Regards, Chris — Chris Smith
