Ah, yes, that was indeed the problem. Building and installing geda-gaf now works, but gschem throws an error message when I try to start it:

$ gschem
gschem: error while loading shared libraries: libgedacairo.so.1: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory

OK, and here I needed to invoke 'sudo ldconfig'.

So I finally got pcb and gschem up and running, although gschem has problems with the desktop theme:

Invalid borders specified for theme pixmap:
        /usr/share/themes/Breeze/gtk-2.0/../assets/line-h.png,
borders don't fit within the imageinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradientinvalid source position for vertical gradient ... [repeated hundreds of times]

Gschem's menus also respond very slowly -- some 3-4 seconds per item. No idea if this has anything to do with the above.

Anyone having an idea how to fix this?
