You can try my sym to kicad eeschema-library program I wrote to export
symbols:
 http://aspodata.se/git/openhw/bin/sym2kicad.pl
it suited my needs then.

Note that kicad is worse on hierarchical schematics and
I find it hard to automate with makefiles.
