There is a new, free and open source CAM file viewer under active
development called camv-rnd

It is leveraging the code base of pcb-rnd for the graphical interface, and
has a new, from scratch parser implementation for Gerber and excellon drill
file formats.

The code can currently be checked out via svn at

svn://svn.repo.hu/camv-rnd/trunk <http://svn.repo.hu/camv>

And the installation procedure is documented in the file INSTALL

Key points are

- it is not a fork, it is a clean implementation of a CAM file viewer

- file format parsing is cleanly separated from rendering

- additional file formats are easy to add due to its modular design

- it is being actively developed. It is at pre-release stage; testing and
bug reports are most welcome and will be dealt with
