I think that somewhere along the way things changed a bit but if so, it
has been a while and my memory has faded a bit. I am currently on Fedora 27.

configuration is in ~/.gEDA and there I have a gafrc file with:

(component-library "/home/dsc560/electronics/symbols")

My local footprints  are in ~/footprints
