Yes - the trackball (which I added) is somewhat pointless as git HEAD
stands right now. A patch to remove it (by option in the GUI preferences)
would be welcome I think.

My later GL work (not upstream yet) should improve speed further still, and
starts to give some Z dimension which makes the track-ball slightly more
interesting. It is not - as you note, necessary to use the package!
