M is schematic sheet number, then NN is component number. you can extend it easily to X-M-NNN if required. And again, I just use "autorenumber" in gschem. Totally trivial. But then I use professional fab house who do photo etching, cnc milling etc etc etc ... ;D and CNC part placement, reflow ovens, wave soldering etc. MJE
