Study configure.ac
Thanks, configure.ac will tell me what the dependencies are and the minimum version numbers they should have.
But what I would like to know is where the agreement "use a minimum Gnome version" is written. And also important are there more of these "agreements".
A newbie should know these.
Are you experienced with the tools used by the project? Remember that

geda and friends.
I have a basic understanding of the Autotools and the Gnu build system. Are there more tools used? And could I encourage you to elaborate on that a little? It would be very helpful. ;-)

Robert.
