I had the same experience. In some aspects it was much more advanced than geda. But for others the switch to gschem/pcb was a revelation. And that was back in 2006 ;-) I have less experience with eagle. But from what I saw, it also comes with a mix of well done aspects and terrible clutches. For what its worth, I fell that the EDA suites to compare to is not $$$ but kicad.
