It's not just the content, it's the appearance. A few glossy images and a first-time-visitor-specific layout makes a big difference. I disabled the registration page completely. There were - literally - thousands of new signups each day. All new wiki contributors currently need an admin to create the account for them. I'm not trying to discourage contributors, it's just the only way to stop the spammers.
