We should not duplicate the misfeatures of commercial packages. Basic actions should be simple: the programmer should never assume complex intent for a simple action. Another example in gEDA is the "select all connected net segments" misfeature. That gets in the way of the normal function of shift-click on a selected object, which is to deselect the object.
