Because the majority of new developers with the skillset and motivation to contribute will end up working on different, competing projects. Software is like fish, if it doesn't keep swimming it dies. Suppose gtk changes enough that gschem needs rework, for example. Unless you want to do all that sort of work yourself you need a viable developer community. Meanwhile other projects will start to develop simulators etc. Its not really a big or challenging deal to tack a few attributes only parts to support simulation, compared to the trouble of having decent GUIs and consistent workflow etc. > I haven't found it difficult to get people to adopt gEDA. But no layout person I work with is willing to use pcb. Well, I guess all I can say to that is add me to the list of people who have successfully made a number of boards with it. Don't get me wrong, I also like the fact that you can pipe things to ngspice instead of pcb, I've done it, its great, but its not going to get you the majority of new users, or probably even a viable minority of them.
