Thanks for your > help, In addition to the helpful answers that others have given, the PCB file format is described in the PCB manual (http://pcb.geda-project.org/pcb-cvs/pcb.html). It's not required for laying out boards in my (limited) experience, but I've found that making footprints for sockets and connectors etc. is much more reliable using Emacs to edit and PCB to look at the results. There are a couple of gotchas in the format related to historical changes in the default units over PCB's history, so I recommend tweaking existing an existing footprint: it's a lot easier to work out what's going on!
