  I get:

$ gsch2pcb test.sch
WARNING: U? has no footprint attribute so won't be in the layout.
No elements found, so nothing to do.
$ 

  but there is no refdes=U?, why is gsch2pcb complaining?

I'm trying to understand gnetlist/scheme/gnet-gsch2pcb.scm, but I
don't find anything obviously related to the above.

With pcb File->import schematics, I get

Unable to load footprint none
Cannot change attribute of U? - element not found
Cannot change attribute of U? - element not found
Cannot change attribute of U? - element not found
Cannot change attribute of U? - element not found
Cannot change attribute of U? - element not found
Can't add rat lines because no netlist is loaded.

So, I have the same problem there, where does the U? come from.
