To answer your original question, you probably want something like: (define homedir "/home/user1/TapeDrive/") (component-library (build-path homedir "gschem-sym")) Does that do what you need? "${FOO}" interpolation only works for environment variables, not Scheme variables. gEDA/gaf 1.8.1 will be available in the Fedora repos soon.
