You may have a look at the bug reports on the Debian package tracker
[1] to get an idea why is this so. In a nutshell: portability problems
with Guile and Python.

Try to set an $LD_LIBRARY_PATH environment variable before launching
gschem: e.g. if you install it to /usr/local, set LD_LIBRARY_PATH to
/usr/local/lib.

My system is FreeBSD, too (13.0-STABLE, amd64). I use cad/lepton-eda
port, a fork of geda-gaf ([2], [3], [4]), on a daily basis. It has been
ported to FreeBSD (and other platforms, including Debian) a long time
ago, and works reliably. I'd recommend you to give it a try.
