Or you may launch gschem from terminal with -v option to get more information. May it be related to your languages settings? Do you use gschem shipped with Ubuntu or compiled yourself? May there exist old configuration files on your computer from older gEDA releases? For Gentoo we have gschem version 1.8.2.20130925 which seems to work fine. Maybe others can give you more helpful advice.
