I didn't have the luxury for multiple attempts and the approach I took, although tedious, was successful. In addition to pcb, I also needed gschem. pcb was, by far, the easiest to install. The default Debian installation appeared to be out of sync with the tutorial. I really just wanted to finish the tutorial, so I built it from scratch.
