That's why it doesn't work. You need to start the refdes of a device modeled by a subcircuit with "X". My new netlist back end at https://github.com/noqsi/gnet-spice-noqsi handles this more flexibly, but the documentation is a bit terse (just a README). There's also a (rapidly evolving) project using this at https://github.com/noqsi/VideoASIC, which might be of assistance as an example, although it's rather complex.
